Applied Thermal Engineering
Applied Thermal Engineering (Appl. Therm. Eng.) is a heat transfer and thermal engineering journal published by Elsevier. Its lineage begins with the Journal of Heat Recovery Systems in 1981 and it has carried its present name from volume 16 in 1996. It concentrates on thermal work from component to system, appears in twenty-four volumes a year, and had a 2025 impact factor of 7.5.《应用热能工程》(Applied Thermal Engineering'''',缩写 Appl. Therm. Eng.'')
Scope
The journal's editorial stance is that a paper must address a thermal system that can actually be built: whether it studies a single component or a whole plant, it must show what measurable improvement in efficiency, emissions or cost it delivers.
- Components and devices: heat exchangers and heat transfer enhancement, heat pipes and phase-change devices, heat pumps and refrigeration cycles, and burners and boiler components.
- Renewable and clean energy: solar thermal collection and collectors, thermal management of fuel cells and electrolysis, battery thermal management and safety, and geothermal and waste-heat power.
- System design: integrated generation, storage and use in industrial and building energy systems, district heating and cooling, process integration and pinch analysis, and retrofit for efficiency.
- Thermal management: cooling of electronic devices, thermal management of data centres and power electronics, and building envelopes and passive cooling.
- Storage and materials: thermal storage materials and phase-change storage, thermochemical storage, and new working fluids and cycles for thermal processes.
- Economic assessment: capital and operating cost analysis of thermal projects, payback calculation for efficiency retrofits, and combined technical-economic and environmental evaluation.
The journal is hybrid and the gold open access article processing charge is 3,540 US dollars. The publisher reports six days to first decision, forty-two days to a decision after review and ninety-five days to acceptance, the first-decision figure including editorial screening本刊为混合出版,金色开放获取的文章处理费为三千五百四十美元;出版方公布投稿至首次决定六天、复审后决定四十二天、投稿至接收九十五天,其中首次决定包含编辑部初筛,录用比例未公布。 no acceptance rate is published.[1]
History
- Predecessors (1981–1995): the lineage begins with the Journal of Heat Recovery Systems in 1981 (volumes 1 to 6), renamed Heat Recovery Systems and CHP in 1987 (volumes 7 to 15)前身刊(1981—1995年): 本刊脉络始于 1981 年的《热回收系统杂志》(第 1 至 6 卷),1987 年改称《热回收系统与热电联产》(第 7 至 15 卷),两刊在图书馆目录中均有独立的 ISSN 著录。 both titles carry separate ISSN records in library catalogues.[2]
- Present name from 1996: the journal took its present name with volume 16 in 1996, widening its scope from heat recovery to thermal engineering as a whole while continuing the predecessor's volume numbering, which is the basis for treating the two as one lineage. [3]
- Growth in volume (2022–2025): the journal issued twenty-two volumes in 2024 and twenty-four in 2025, in step with the growth of thermal engineering submissions during the energy transition, with volume numbers now past 280. [3]
- Metrics and indexing: the impact factor is 7.5 and the CiteScore 10.9. The journal is indexed in Scopus and the Science Citation Index Expanded but not in MEDLINE, and ranks near the top of the thermodynamics and energy engineering categories. [1]
Editors
The journal is led by an editor-in-chief supported by a board divided by field. Long tenure has been a feature of the title: two successive editors each served for more than a decade, which has kept its acceptance standards highly continuous. [4]
- Present editor-in-chief: Christos N. Markides holds the chair. He is at Imperial College London and works on solar thermal energy and thermodynamic cycles. The publisher states neither the year of his appointment nor the term of his predecessor. [4]
- Founding editor: David Reay is described by the publisher as the founding and long-serving editor-in-chief, a leading figure in heat recovery and heat pipe technology, whose tenure spanned the first decade and more after the rename创刊主编: (David Reay)被出版方称为本刊的创刊并长期担任主编者,是余热回收与热管技术方向的代表人物,其任期跨越本刊由前身刊改名后的最初十余年;(Robert Taylor)亦曾出任主编。 Robert Taylor also served as editor-in-chief.[5]
- Role in the field: the journal has long been a principal venue for engineering research in thermal and energy systems, and its combination of component design with system economics gives it a readership spanning academia and engineering practice alike. [6]
