APL Photonics
APL Photonics is a monthly gold open access journal published by AIP Publishing, launched late in 2015 with its first papers appearing in April 2016 and covering fundamental and applied photonics across disciplines, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 5.7.《APL
Scope
- Light sources, lasers, nonlinear optics, ultrafast photonics and guided-wave optics define the physical core of the journal.
- Nanophotonics, plasmonics, optoelectronics and integrated photonics are treated as the engineering edge of the field.
- Biophotonics, biomedical optics and optical imaging extend the journal into the life sciences.
- Optical communications, quantum photonics, photovoltaics, sensors and terahertz science are all named in the coverage list.
- Articles, Letters, Invited Articles, Perspectives, Tutorials and Special Topic collections are the accepted formats, with no fixed length limit on invited content.
- Manuscripts devoted to mathematical or computational problems only marginally related to photonics, or to incremental engineering and materials advances, are excluded.
- Comments of up to one thousand words allow published papers to be challenged, with a response from the original authors.
History
- AIP Publishing announced the new title in September 2015 and opened it for submission in October, with Benjamin Eggleton of the University of Sydney as founding editor-in-chief.(AIP Publishing)于 2015 年 9 月公布该新刊,10 月开放投稿,创刊主编为悉尼大学的(Benjamin Eggleton)。
- Eggleton's opening editorial framed the journal as the open access home for photonics within the Applied Physics Letters family of titles.(Eggleton)的创刊社论把期刊定位为(Applied Physics Letters)系列中面向光子学的开放获取园地。[1]
- The first Journal Impact Factor, released in 2019, was 4.383 and placed the journal in the first quartile of optics.2019
- By its tenth anniversary the journal had published more than sixteen hundred papers and accrued close to twenty-seven thousand citations.
- Andrew Forbes of the University of the Witwatersrand was appointed in November 2025 to succeed Eggleton from 1 January 2026.(Andrew Forbes)于 2025 年 11 月获任,自 2026 年 1 月 1 日起接替(Eggleton)。[2]
- The 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 5.7, against 5.3 in 2024 and 6.382 in 2022, and the journal ranks 22nd of 129 in optics.2025
Editors
- Andrew Forbes, Distinguished Professor of physics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, is editor-in-chief from January 2026.
- Forbes founded the Structured Light Laboratory in 2015 and works on structured light and quantum photonics, and he is the first AIP Publishing editor-in-chief based in Africa.(Forbes)于 2015 年创建结构光实验室,研究结构光与量子光子学,是(AIP Publishing)首位常驻非洲的主编。
- Benjamin Eggleton, now director of Sydney Nano, led the journal from 2016 to 2025 and remains associated with its nonlinear optics constituency.(Benjamin Eggleton)现任悉尼纳米研究所所长,2016 至 2025 年领导本刊,至今仍与其非线性光学群体保持联系。
- A team of associate editors spans the topical breadth of photonics and gives the journal an international editorial profile.
- An editorial advisory board of established researchers from around the world advises on direction and on the shaping of the journal.
- Perspectives and Tutorials are invited rather than submitted, with tutorials intended as entry points for newcomers to a topic and perspectives reserved for expert opinion.
