APL Bioengineering
APL Bioengineering is a fully open-access journal published by AIP Publishing, launched in 2017 to cover research where biology meets physics and engineering, with a 2025 Journal Impact Factor of 4.9.「APL
Scope
- Biofabrication and bioprinting form one core area, covering printed scaffolds, organ models and additive manufacturing of living constructs.
- Biomedical materials, sensors and imaging are grouped together, from implantable materials to diagnostic devices and imaging probes.
- Engineered living systems and cell or tissue engineering cover the design of cells, tissues and organoids with controlled function.
- Regenerative medicine, including stem cell engineering, biomaterial scaffolds and tissue-integrating hydrogels, is a standing theme.
- Molecular, cell and tissue biomechanics address how mechanical forces shape cell fate, tissue growth and disease progression.
- Systems and computational biology are in scope, and the journal explicitly welcomes artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to any of its topical areas.
- Computational work must be validated experimentally, so predictions of genes, pathways or candidate therapeutics need evidence of biological or engineering relevance.
History
- The first volume appeared in 2017, with issue 1 carrying the launch editorial by editor-in-chief Justin Cooper-White. [1]
- AIP Publishing, the publishing arm of the American Institute of Physics, has issued the journal since its launch.
- It was gold open access from the first issue, with articles under a CC BY licence and costs met by an article processing charge rather than subscriptions.
- The journal is online only, identified by ISSN 2473-2877 and CODEN ABPID9, and appears in four issues a year, reaching Volume 10 in 2026.
- Output has stayed close to one hundred research items a year, with 103 articles published in 2025 and 603 DOIs deposited in total.
- Its 2025 Journal Impact Factor is 4.9 with a five-year value of 5.7, and Scopus gives a CiteScore of 6.6, an SJR of 1.099 and an h-index of 47.2025 年期刊影响因子为 4.9,五年影响因子 5.7,(Scopus)给出的(CiteScore)为 6.6,(SJR)为 1.099,(h 指数)为 47。
Editors
- Justin Cooper-White, professor at the University of Queensland, is Editor-in-Chief and works on tissue engineering, biomaterials and regenerative medicine.(Justin Cooper-White)为主编,任(University of Queensland)教授,研究组织工程、生物材料与再生医学。
- Five associate editors handle the field, among them Liming Bian at the South China University of Technology, Adam Engler at the University of California, San Diego, and Arianna Menciassi at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.五位副编辑分工负责各方向,包括(South China University of Technology)的(Liming Bian)、(University of California,San Diego)的(Adam Engler)与(Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna)的(Arianna Menciassi)。
- Two independent referees are normally invited, with additional reviews where an editor judges it necessary, and decisions usually follow one or two rounds.
- Reviewers are anonymous to authors, and accepted formats are articles, reviews, perspectives, comments and errata.
- In 2025 the average time to first decision was 24 days, to acceptance 134 days and to publication 158 days.2025
- Rejected authors may appeal through the submission site with a revised manuscript and a one-page case, and editors normally rule within one to two weeks.
