Annals of Glaciology
Annals of Glaciology is the journal of the International Glaciological Society and is published on the society's behalf by Cambridge University Press. It has appeared since 1980, and each issue is thematic, taking a single subject that runs from ice-core drilling to sea ice.
Scope
- The remit is original scientific articles and letters in selected aspects of glaciology, which the journal defines as the study of ice.
- Because each issue is thematic, the subject matter moves with the theme instead of following a fixed list of subfields.
- Recent themes have included Glaciers and Ice Sheets in a Warming Climate, Ice Core Drilling Technology and Sea Ice in a Changing Environment.
- Two more themes named on the about page are the contribution of glaciers and ice sheets to sea level change, and glaciology in High Mountain Asia.
- Themes are not settled by the editors alone. Proposals come from the glaciological community and go to the Council of the International Glaciological Society.
- Articles report new findings and theories, or new instruments and methods, and the same category takes review articles that give an up-to-date account of a subject developing fast or long neglected.「Articles」刊载新发现与新理论,也刊载新仪器与新方法,同一栏目还收综述,条件是综述对某一快速发展或长期被忽视的方向给出及时而连贯的梳理。
- Letters are topical and shorter, and the processing charge for them is substantially reduced.「Letters」
- A comment on a paper already published is handled as a letter, whatever its length.
- Communications are short pieces without abstracts, and the category covers comments, book reviews and short correspondence on matters the community is following.「Communications」是不带摘要的短稿,涵盖评论、书评与学界关心的短函。
- For the purpose of Gold Open Access funding, Articles and Letters both count as research articles.
- Coverage is broad by design. Since issue 1 on the use of icebergs in 1980 and issue 2 on glacier erosion and sedimentation in 1981, every branch of glaciology has appeared in at least one issue.
- Volume titles alone name radioglaciology, ice drilling, ice streams and outlet glaciers, snow and avalanches, glacier erosion and sedimentation, sea ice, ice cores, remote sensing and glaciology in High Mountain Asia.
History
- Volume 1 belongs to 1980 and carries the Cambridge conference on the use of icebergs, which weighed the scientific and practical feasibility of the idea.
- Charles Swithinbank edited that opening volume, and Garry Clarke edited volume 2 in 1981, the symposium on processes of glacier erosion and sedimentation held at Geilo in Norway.

- Those first volumes were symposium proceedings, each tied to a meeting and to a named editor, and the format held for decades.
- The numbering has run unbroken from volume 1 in 1980 to volume 67 in 2026, and volume 68 is already listed for 2027.
- Output was heavier in the 1990s and 2000s, when two or three volumes could appear in one year, and volumes 45, 46 and 47 all belong to 2007.
- Recent years have settled at one volume a year, divided into numbered issues, with three issues in volume 65 for 2024 and two so far in volume 67.
- The society also publishes the Journal of Glaciology, and both titles appear on the IGS journals blog, with associate chief editors appointed across the society's journals.
- The print number is 0260-3055 and the electronic number 1727-5644.
- The earliest volumes carry the society's own imprint in Cambridge, and the current imprint reads Cambridge University Press for the International Glaciological Society.
- The journal is fully open access, and every article is published as Gold Open Access under a Creative Commons licence.
- Authors choose among CC BY, CC BY-NC-SA and CC BY-NC-ND, and the terms of reuse are printed in the copyright line of each article.
- Costs are met through institutional agreements with Cambridge, the Cambridge Open Equity Initiative for more than a hundred low- and middle-income countries, or the Research4Life scheme.
- A corresponding author outside those routes may ask the society for a discretionary waiver at igsoc@igsoc.org, and members acting as corresponding author receive a 10 per cent discount.
- Green open access lets authors deposit pre-published versions in repositories, and Cambridge Core Share offers a read-only link to the version of record.
- In the 2025 Journal Citation Reports the title stands 129th of 259 in multidisciplinary geosciences and 36th of 71 in physical geography.
- The snapshot records 4100 citations, about 30 articles a year and a cited half-life of 16.8 years, and gold open access accounts for 100 per cent of the content.
- The title is indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded, and PubMed carries selected citations only.
Editors
- Hester Jiskoot of the University of Lethbridge in Canada is Chief Editor.
