Anatomy is the branch of biology that studies the internal and external structure of organisms and their parts. Its name comes from the Greek ἀνατομή (anatomē), "dissection", formed from ana ("up") and temnein ("to cut").

Its range runs from structures large enough to be seen with the naked eye down to cells and organelles, and it is bound to embryology, comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology and phylogeny, the processes that generate anatomical structure over short and long timescales.

Human anatomy is one of the basic sciences of medicine and is usually taught alongside physiology, and since the 1970s sectional imaging and digital cadaver datasets have added a radiological layer to a discipline that once rested on the dissecting table alone.
