Alumohydrocalcite

Alumohydrocalcite is a hydrated calcium aluminium carbonate that forms chalky white to pale blue fibrous crusts and spherulites in the oxidised zones of limestones, dolomites and bauxite deposits.

It was first described in 1926 from Khakassia in Siberia and is classed as a grandfathered species, since it entered the literature long before the International Mineralogical Association was founded.

The mineral is soft, with a Mohs hardness of only 2.5, and it is best known for the chromian varieties that develop a deep violet colour near weathering chromite.
