Alternating hemiplegia

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder in which recurrent episodes of hemiplegia alternate between the two sides of the body, beginning before 18 months of age and accompanied by developmental delay, dystonia and often epilepsy.

Most cases are caused by dominant variants in ATP1A3, the gene encoding the neuron-specific sodium-potassium pump alpha-3 subunit, and the attacks are typically relieved by sleep.
