Alois Fürstner

Alois Fürstner is an Austrian chemist who turned alkyne metathesis from a laboratory curiosity into a routine step of complex molecule synthesis, and who has built a body of catalysis around gold, platinum, iron, chromium and ruthenium instead of relying on a single workhorse metal.

Since 1998 he has directed the department of organometallic chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where every new catalytic method is judged by whether it survives a total synthesis.
