Allogeneic processed thymus tissue

Allogeneic processed thymus tissue, sold under the brand name Rethymic, is a thymus tissue therapy used for immune reconstitution in children with congenital athymia, a rare condition in which patients are born without a functioning thymus gland. It is the first thymus tissue product ever approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, cleared in October 2021 for pediatric patients, and it is administered as a one-time surgical implantation of cultured donor thymus slices into the quadriceps muscle. Reconstitution of protective immunity takes six months to two years, and the product carries a wholesale acquisition cost of 2.81 million U.S. dollars, placing it among the most expensive therapies in the world.
