Scope
- Agroecology here means more than new or improved farming practices and the on-farm management of natural resources. The journal defines it as the ecology of the entire food system.
- That definition runs along paired scales, from the field to the table, from growers and processors to consumers, from urban to rural, from farm policy to food policy, and from local to global.
- Agroecology has grown into a broad transdisciplinary field that joins science, practice and the movements driving change in every part of the food system.
- The scope is food-system wide, bridging farm to global and production to consumption, and it takes in the communities, institutions and knowledge systems the food system holds.
- Work may come from the biophysical, social or inter- and transdisciplinary areas, and co-created or community-led research that embodies agroecological tenets is prioritized.
- The editors particularly welcome writing from Indigenous scholars and organizers, laborers across the food system, civil society groups and activist communities of scholarship.
- Approaches not labelled agroecology still qualify when they are on-farm, participatory, change-oriented and critical, provided the manuscript shows how farmers took part or why participation was not reasonable.
- Work built mainly on surveys, modelling, laboratory or experiment station studies is seldom published, nor is indicator or species-distribution research that stays non-participatory or adds nothing beyond the system studied.
- Papers on sustainable or organic agriculture, resource efficiency or input substitution are not published unless they explicitly engage agroecological principles and design, since many other venues exist for that work.
- Reviews and meta-analyses are accepted only when they offer a novel synthesis that supports agroecological transformation, and each must state an explicit hypothesis, question or objective.
- Indigenous research must set out in its methods section the principles and protocols agreed with communities, whether a memorandum of understanding, a co-created protocol or the CARE principles for data sovereignty.
- Four of the eight themes cover agroecosystem design and evaluation, Indigenous knowledge and practice, organic and alternative systems, and the economic, social and philosophical aspects of agroecology, including multifunctional landscapes and ecological function.
- The other four are agriculture and global climate change, future projections and policy options, critical engagement with technology and technological change, and racial and socioeconomic justice in food systems.
- Readers include scientists at international, national and state research stations, educators and students, farmers and food workers, planners, policymakers, community organizations, social movements and the concerned public.
- Five article types are accepted: research articles and review articles of up to 10,000 words, commentaries of 3,500 words, book reviews of 2,000 words and editorials by the editors.
- Special issues gather six to ten articles in one issue with a framing introduction, while collections draw on an open call and publish on a rolling basis, and dialogue pieces run alongside the articles.
