Scope
- Scope: the journal is designed to fill a large void, namely a source for critical reviews and viewpoints on emerging findings on mechanisms of ageing and age-related disease, with an emphasis on cellular and molecular mechanisms of the ageing process and applications in extending lifespan and preventing disease. [2]
- Topics: the cellular and molecular basis of ageing mechanisms, age-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, lifespan-extending interventions such as caloric restriction, and telomerase, stem cells, energy metabolism and oxygen free radical metabolism.
- Article types: the journal centres on in-depth review articles, and the official guide for authors states that submissions may be made in three formats.
- Publishing model: hybrid open access, with authors choosing between an open access route carrying an article processing charge and a subscription route free of publication charges.
- Indexing and metrics: covered by Scopus, Medline and the SCIE and tracked by the SJR and SNIP indicators, with a 2025 impact factor of 15.5, a CiteScore of 24.1 and roughly six days to first decision.
History
- Founded: the journal was founded in 2002 with volumes numbered consecutively by year, running at six volumes a year before 2015, eight volumes a year through 2021 and ten volumes a year from 2022 onwards. [3]
- Title history: no renaming on record, the title Ageing Research Reviews has been in use since 2002.
- Intellectual context: the journal grew up as ageing research shifted from phenomenological description to mechanistic dissection and gerontology and cell biology converged, a turn long reflected in its review coverage.
