Advanced Materials
Advanced Materials (Adv. Mater.) is a weekly materials science journal published by Wiley-VCH, part of John Wiley & Sons, at Weinheim in Germany. Founded in 1989, it is among the highest-impact general titles in materials science, appears every week with fifty-two issues a year, and had a 2025 impact factor of 29.1.《先进材料》(Advanced Materials'''',缩写 Adv. Mater.'')
Scope
The journal's editorial stance is to take only a small part of the most important work in materials science: a paper must not only stand up within its own subfield but also be worth reading for the materials community as a whole, so the editorial office applies cross-field significance as its principal filter at first screening. Coverage spans all the main branches of materials science and concentrates on:本刊的取稿立场是「只收材料科学中最重要的一小部分工作」:一篇论文不但要在自己的方向上成立,还要对整个材料共同体具有阅读价值,因此编辑部在初筛阶段即以跨子领域的意义为主要尺度。
- Chemistry and synthesis: synthetic routes and methodology for new materials, polymers and organic materials, catalysis and surface chemistry, and supramolecular and self-assembled systems.
- Physics and nanotechnology: low-dimensional and quantum materials, the making and properties of nanostructures, topological and two-dimensional materials, and new methods of characterisation and measurement.
- Energy materials: photovoltaics and photoelectrochemistry, battery and storage materials, electrocatalysis and hydrogen, and thermoelectric and energy conversion materials.
- Biomaterials and the medical interface: tissue engineering scaffolds, materials for drug delivery, biointerfaces and biosensing, and materials combining diagnosis with therapy.
- Optoelectronics and devices: light-emitting and display materials, semiconductor devices and device physics, flexible electronics, and sensor and memory materials.
- Ceramics, metals and engineering materials: structural ceramics and high-temperature materials, alloys and metal-matrix composites, additive manufacturing and processing, and mechanical behaviour in service.
The journal is hybrid and authors may pay an article processing charge to publish gold open access. The publisher reports very heavy submission traffic in 2025 with an acceptance rate of about fifteen per cent and a median of fourteen days from submission to first decision. [1]
History
- Founding (1988–1989): the journal first appeared in 1988 as a supplement to Angewandte Chemie and was launched as an independent title in 1989 with its own first volume. It was positioned as a materials science journal from the outset rather than becoming one later. [2]
- Publishing history (1997): the journal was published by VCH Publishers from its launch, and from September 1997, as VCH was absorbed into John Wiley & Sons, by Wiley-VCH at Weinheim出版方沿革(1997年): 创刊后由(VCH Publishers)出版,1997 年 9 月起随(VCH)并入威立体系,改由(Wiley-VCH)在魏恩海姆出版,编辑部所在地与刊名自此未再变动。 neither the editorial base nor the title has changed since.[3]
- Growth and the move to weekly publication: the journal moved from monthly to weekly publication and now appears fifty-two times a year, one of the few general materials titles on a weekly cycle. It carried some 3,700 papers in 2025, a volume far beyond its early years. [1]
- Metrics and the sister family: the 2025 impact factor is 29.1, with a CiteScore of 42 and a journal citation indicator of 3.56. The journal has grown into a family that includes Advanced Functional Materials and Advanced Energy Materials, with the sister titles siphoning off work by specialism while this one keeps a general remit. [1]
Editors
In 2024 the journal moved to two co-editors-in-chief, one inside the publishing house and one in academia, who divide editorial process from academic judgement本刊的编辑架构在 2024 年改为两名主编共同主持,两人分处出版方内部与学术界,分别负责编辑流程与学术判断;此前的数十年里本刊长期实行单一主编制,主编多由出版方的专职编辑担任。 for the preceding decades it ran under a single editor-in-chief, usually a professional editor employed by the publisher.[4]
- Present co-editors-in-chief (since 2024): Irem Bayindir-Buchhalter for Wiley-VCH and Esther Levy for the academic community have served jointly since issue 1 of 2024, each bringing editorial experience in materials chemistry and nanomaterials. [5]
- Immediate predecessors: Jos Lenders led the journal until 2023 and moved on to become the publisher's director of editorial evaluation前任主编: (Jos Lenders)主持本刊至 2023 年,卸任后转任出版方的编辑评估总监;再前一任(Peter Gregory)曾两度主持本刊,前后任期合计超过二十年,是本刊体量成型期的关键人物。 before him Peter Gregory held the chair twice, for more than twenty years in total, and was the central figure in the journal's period of growth.[2]
- Early editors: Peter Gregory led the journal in its first years and Esther Levy held the chair from 2002 to 2006, a rare woman editor-in-chief among materials science titles at the time. The publisher does not publish exact start and end years for every tenure. [4]
- Standing in the field: the journal has long been treated as the showcase title of materials science, and much of what it publishes goes on to define directions for the field as a whole学科地位: 本刊长期被视作材料科学的门面刊物,其刊载的许多工作后来成为整个领域的研究方向;刊物在筛选尺度上的严格,也使其成为材料学者衡量研究分量的常用参照。 the severity of its screening makes it a common yardstick by which materials researchers measure the weight of their work.[3]
