- The title sits in orthopaedics rather than in general medicine, and its subject list places it among the journals that report laboratory work on musculoskeletal science.
History
- The journal was founded in 1930 by a group of Scandinavian orthopaedic surgeons who wanted an outlet for Nordic research with an international audience.
- It ran from 1930 to 2004 under a Scandinavian title, abbreviated Acta Orthop Scand, and the catalogue record gives its run as volume 1 in 1930 to volume 75 number 6 in December 2004.
- Volume numbering was never restarted, so the volume that appeared in 2005 continued the count of the Scandinavian years and the sequence still runs unbroken today.
- In 2005 the title was shortened to its present form, and the journal took the print ISSN 1745-3674 with the electronic ISSN 1745-3682.2005 年刊名缩短为现在的形式,并启用印刷 ISSN 1745-3674 与电子 ISSN 1745-3682。
- The Copenhagen publisher Munksgaard printed the Scandinavian years, and the imprint moved to Basingstoke in England when Taylor and Francis took the journal over in 2005.
- From 2022 the journal is published by Medical Journals Sweden in Uppsala, while the Taylor and Francis site still carries the volumes and the archive.
- From volume 93 in 2022 the journal publishes articles as they are accepted and gathers them into one annual volume, after six issues a year up to volume 92 in 2021.
- It has been an open access title since 2005, when it was set up as a platinum journal that charged authors nothing, and it still publishes open access articles only.
- Since the move to Uppsala an article processing charge of EUR 2,400 has been levied on original articles, reviews and educationals, while editorials and letters stay free.
- A ninety year anniversary article in 2020 looked back on the first volume and on the place of Nordic orthopaedic surgery in the making of the speciality.2020 年一篇九十周年纪念文章回顾了创刊卷,也回顾了北欧骨科手术在学科形成过程中所占的位置。[2]
- The medical library catalogue lists the journal as the official publication of the Nordic Orthopedic Federation, and the national medical library also records the older supplement series under the same numbering.
- The supplement issue number 315 is also called volume 76, which is the clearest sign that the numbering of the parent journal carried straight through the change of title.
- The journal used to appear as a bimonthly in the Scandinavian years, and the supplement series ran under its own numbering from number 315 in 2005 until it closed in 2015.
- The whole run since 1930 can be read online without charge, and the publisher backfilled digital object identifiers for the older volumes down to the 1960s.
- The published record shows a steady output in recent years, with about a hundred papers appearing in each annual volume.
- The print run was carried for two decades from a Copenhagen address, and the catalogued imprint still reads Copenhagen with the Munksgaard name.

- The review model is open, with both sides disclosed, which is why the publisher describes it as a single blind policy while the journal itself stresses the transparency of the process.
- Article types are fixed in the instructions, and authors are told which reporting standards to follow for randomised trials, cohort studies, registry studies, systematic reviews and meta analyses.
