Acoustic trauma

Acoustic trauma is an acute injury of the inner ear and, less often, of the tympanic membrane, produced by a single very intense sound such as a blast, gunshot, firecracker or a sudden burst of loud shouting.

It is distinguished from chronic noise-induced hearing loss by the impulsive character of the exposure, and it is an otological emergency because treatment started within days can preserve hearing.
